The largest selection of Historic Rally Cars ever assembled in the UK will come to Bath in October.
Lombard Rally Bath was conceived by former rally driver, Tim Nash, to replicate part of the route of the 1976 Lombard RAC Rally combined with a reunion of former competitors at a dinner at the McDonald Bath Spa Hotel. The cars will visit four former "special stages" and drive them at non-competitive speeds. The response to the event has been hugely more than was expected, with some 120 cars coming to Bath and some very well known period Rally Crews also attending.
In all some 50 different types of car will attend from the oldest, a pre-war Alvis Special, through many Minis, Fords from a 1958 Zephyr, Cortinas, Escort Mk1 and Mark 2, Sierras, Puma and Escort Cosworth, Triumph TR4, Dolomite Sprint and a selection of the brutal TR7V8s, Rover SD1, Volkswagens from Beetles to Golfs, the cars that changed the face of rallying in the 1980s - Audi Quattros and MG Metro 6R4, amongst others.
Where to see the cars in action during the day
Lombard Rally Bath 2019 will take you on a route that initially recreates the first morning of the 1986 Lombard RAC Rally. Starting from Bath Racecourse, the cars will head into Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Saturday mid-morning will see the cars arrive at Cirencester Park, where they will drive an exact recreation of the old special stage used on the Arkell Rally in the 1970s and also used on the Lombard RAC Rally. Following one run around the park, the cars will return to a stop in the centre of the park, to swap rally stories old and new.
Whilst the drivers have a quick coffee, spectators will be able to have a look at the cars, before they have a second run. There will be other attractions and stands to visit.
The cars will then visit other Stately Home venues in Gloucestershire before passing over the Severn Bridge to take lunch at the Celtic Manor Resort. Again, spectators will be welcome to see the cars at rest.
After lunch the cars will visit three other former rally stages in the Welsh Valleys – Parc Bryn Bach at Tredegar, Aberdare Park, plus another secret venue.
Just as dusk falls the cars will return to Celtic Manor Resort before driving through a specially organised all tarmac stage inside the resorts’s grounds, which includes the roads used on Wales Rally GB a few years ago. That will be spectacular! Spectators who want to watch in the dry and warm surroundings of the 2010 Clubhouse will be able to purchase a special hospitality ticket, including food.
